Three Steps Forward, One (Minor) Step Back.

Greetings, and welcome to my gallery!

I appreciate any and all comments, questions, critiques, etcetera, so please don't hesitate to say whatever you wish! I may not respond to everything, but I do read everything!

Update:

In the past few months, I've received a bit more attention for my photography than I was previously used to, and it's been very exciting and inspiring. A few individuals have been helping get my name out there, and helping me find work- I'm really grateful for their efforts.

Increased recognition comes with a price- I've also had my first few instances of art theft. Part of me is flattered, part of me is sad to see the beginning of what will be a never-ending struggle. I can't say I didn't expect it- nearly every friend I have that produces some form of art for a living has had their work ripped off in some way or another. I've taken care here and there to ensure that my stuff is more difficult to use without permission, but as the saying goes: "where there's a will, there's a way."

I'm still looking seriously at doing prints of macro shots, and other (more abstract) photography. I started a poll to find out if anyone might be interested in purchasing my artwork as prints in the future, and to hear any suggestions as to what I might subject or style they would like to see me focus on.

If you have any suggestions, or if you just want to help out by giving me a rough idea of how to proceed, answer my poll! Thanks!

My name is Jon, and I live in Florida.

I started taking photos (and video) at a rather young age, and never really thought much of it. I went to school for Game Art and Design, and realized it wasn't quite the right fit for me, so I took a break from my studies and began finding out who I really am. I worked retail, got my Bartending Certification, and did a lot of soul-searching.

Sadly, it took a tragedy to find out that Photography was in my future. For about a year, I had been taking photos with a typical point-and-shoot camera at events my girlfriend participated in. Out of the blue, someone close to me passed away, and due to my recent interest in photography, I was offered his Nikon D70. He was a very accomplished photographer, and I felt incredibly lucky, and humbled by the opportunity to use his camera.

Since then, his camera's sensor gave out, and I was distraught. I hadn't realized how much I had enjoyed taking photos. I considered the time and money required to get the sensor repaired, and reasoned that if I was going to take Photography to a professional level, I would be better off spending the money on a modern camera of my own choosing. I went with the Nikon D7000, because of it's relatively median price, it's new sensor, and it's compatibility with the Nikon lenses I had for the D70.

As of right now, I've been using DSLRs for about two years, and I'm entirely self-taught. I hope to take proper classes, to improve my understanding of the process, technique, and spirit of photography under the guidance of a true professional.

My main focuses are currently Event, Wildlife, Portrait, and Macro Photography, probably in descending order.

My goal is to use deviantART to share my work with others, in order to receive helpful critiqués, to gain exposure by being a part of the community, and for inspiration.
