/)^3^(\ Ferrets are so CUTE! Is it true they need lots of attention because they're so active? Like more than a cat?

They DO need quite a bit of attention. They're best described as a puppy, kitten, and genius 2yr old all mixed into one animal that has more bravery and stubbornness than it has smarts. I have a group of 5 myself, and am baby sitting 2 for a friend. It's quite the chore some days.

They're def one of those animals that you want to spend about a year researching before getting one. They have very high chances of getting some form of cancer by the age of 5yrs. They have very specific diet. Most ferret owners I know will agree on that on a scale of one to ten, their "neediness" is about an 8.5-9.

Thanks for the reply. I´ve had rats and this sounds similar, except that rats are obviously smaller.
One more question. When you say more bravery and stubbornness than it has smarts, do you mean it takes a lot of effort to teach them things (i.e. you´re not allowed on the table), or you can´t teach them at all?

It's sort of a double edge blade. On one hand, they're insanely intelligent. They are easily taught their names. They can learn tricks as well as any dog, can be potty trained, and are problem solving smart. They learn how to get into anything and get a hold of whatever they want.

But on the other hand, they're dumber than a box of rocks. They don't learn the first, second, third or forth time (if ever) that if they jump off the couch the floor is ALWAYS going to be 3-4ft down. Or that if they put their face in their water bowl 100 times, the water is ALWAYS going to be wet. But that's what makes them cute.

And by bravery and stubbornness, I meant that they have no issues putting themselves in danger out of curiosity sake. If something is 10ft up on a shelf and they can get up there, they will. Regardless of the fall being able to injure or kill them. Something smells good on the other side of that hole? Alright, I'll cram my head in there even though I could get stuck and possibly break my neck.

So you have to learn, as a ferret owner, to be on your toes at all points in time. OR, make one room "ferret proofed" where they can play safely without possibly injury.
